Persecuted

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."   Matthew 5:11-12

I don't know about you, but for me, the reason I don't like to talk to people about God is because I know there's a good chance they're going to think I'm crazy.  You hear it all the time, don't you?

"why would a God who created the world allow this much pain and suffering?"
"We don't need religion anymore.  We have science."
"Why don't you just keep your religion to yourself, and let me live my life my way."

The list goes on.  No matter the response, I always walk away feeling stupid and insulted, you know?

But, you know what, God says we shouldn't let that get us down.  He says we have great reward in heaven waiting for us when this happens to us.  We should keep at it!

Do you know what many of us do, though, to compensate?  Many of us become arrogant when we talk to others about God so we don't have to look insulted.  Then, when people reject us, we take that as being persecuted.  The reality is that those people are not reacting to the message of God.  They are reacting to our prideful, arrogant attitude.  There's no reward in heaven for us in that situation.

So, today, when we speak to others about God, let's make sure we do it because we truly care about them, and let's leave our pride at the door.  That way, if people decide to reject it and respond with insults, we can still have the joy of knowing we have reward in heaven, and it will motivate us to keep talking.
